Tooth Extractions
Ending Oral Pain With an Extraction
Leaving a broken, infected, or impacted tooth in place may cause you more pain in the long run than a simple tooth extraction using gentle techniques and local anesthetic.
To learn more about our comfortable extraction treatments, contact Dr. Newey for a consultation at our Clearfield, UT, oral surgery practice serving Laytona and Syracuse. We are located about 30 minutes north of Salt Lake City, Utah, via I-15.
7 Reasons for Tooth Extractions
Severe decay
Infection that can't be resolved with a root canal
Gum disease (that has caused a tooth to become loose)
A significant dental fracture
Severe dental crowding (no room for the tooth)
Orthodontics prep (crowded teeth could prevent alignment)
Dental impaction (such as wisdom teeth that don't have enough room to grow normally)

Why See Our Oral Surgeon for Tooth Extractions?
Most dentists perform simple extractions. However, many dentists do not perform complex tooth extractions, such as cases involving wisdom teeth that have impacted bone, gum, or neighboring dental tissue.
Dr. Newey is an oral surgeon, meaning he has many years of specialized oral surgical training. He is qualified to perform all types of extractions, and many dentists in the area refer patients to him in complex cases.
Our Clearfield, UT, practice has advanced digital X-ray and 3D imaging equipment that many dentist offices do not. These tools can make your extraction as precise, efficient, and comfortable as possible.
Dr. Newey can develop a customized post-extraction plan for you, such as replacing extracted teeth with dental implants and lifelike restorations.
The Extraction Process
- Normal Extraction
- Dr. Newey will grasp the tooth with specialized dental forceps and gently move it back and forth until it becomes loose enough for removal.
- Surgical Extraction
- In the case of impacted wisdom teeth, Dr. Newey will precisely incise gum and bone tissue where the tooth is trapped. He will grasp the tooth with dental forceps and move it back and forth to loosen it. He may separate the tooth into sections to make it easier to extract.
What Is Recovery Like?
Avoid smoking, drinking from a straw, or strenuous exercise for a day or two.
Replacing Lost Teeth With Dental Implants
While extracted wisdom teeth do not need to be replaced, we recommend that you replace other teeth with implants. That's because implants not only give dentures and other replacement teeth exceptional stability, but also provide the stimulation needed to prevent jaw atrophy after tooth loss.
Implants require a minor surgery, after which you can expect some swelling, slight bleeding, and mild discomfort. Dr. Newey will prescribe pain meds to maintain your comfort as you recover. In about three to six months, when the implants have completely integrated with the jaw, they will be able to support your dentures, bridges, or crowns.
